December 11, 2023

Nine students from the School of Foreign Languages claimed nine awards, including two first prizes, at the 10th Hunan Provincial Postgraduate Translation Contest held on December 9 at Hunan University of Science and Technology. Zhou Mengdan and Guo Xun captured first place in the interpreting category, while Zhang Zhixuan and Xiao Tingdong secured second prizes. In the written translation competition, Huang Keyue and Wang Shiqi earned second prizes, and Chen Xinhui, Yan Jiayue, and Yao Yingtong took third. For its strong showing, Central South University also received the Outstanding Organization Award. The contestants demonstrated poise and technical excellence throughout the competition, showcasing advanced interpreting and translation capabilities alongside strong cross-cultural communication skills.

The Hunan Provincial Postgraduate Translation Contest ranks among the province’s premier academic competitions in foreign language studies. This year's event drew 147 graduate students from 15 universities, 90 in the written translation division and 57 in interpreting. The written competition required students to translate two passages (approximately 400 words English-to-Chinese and 300 words Chinese-to-English) within 150 minutes, with 75 minutes allotted for each direction. The interpreting competition unfolded across three elimination rounds: consecutive, dialogue, and conference interpreting. Final rankings aggregated scores from all stages. The contest aims to sharpen graduate students' language proficiency, particularly in translation and cross-cultural communication, while training specialists capable of navigating global discourse.

Guided by faculty mentors, the contestants prepared rigorously and delivered polished performances. These victories underscore the School’s successful integration of competitive practice into graduate training, a strategy that has produced consistent winners in recent years. The School remains committed to advancing its graduate programs and supporting student success in future competitions.
